Manchester City considering Diogo Costa swoop

Manchester City could consider a move for Diogo Costa to replace Ederson Moraes should the Brazilian leave the club next summer.
According to Caught Offside, Manchester City is considering Diogo Costa as a player who could replace Ederson Moraes. The latter’s future is still not secure at the club following persistent Saudi Arabian links, as Pep Guardiola could consider the FC Porto man as the ideal replacement.

It’s been a few years since Portugal and FC Porto No.1 Diogo Costa have seen links to the Premier League. This summer, too many clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City, were closely monitoring his situation, but none came forward with an offer.

The Blues signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal, while the Gunners brought in Neto as Aaron Ramsdale’s replacement. Manchester City could have been an interesting choice, who had their current No.1 with at least two big Saudi Pro League clubs chasing for his signature.

Numerous reports stated that Saudi Clubs wanted to make Ederson Moraes one of the highest-paid players in the world and certainly the No.1 in the goalkeeping category. The only reason he did not move was the disagreement with Manchester City over their asking price. Pep Guardiola’s side refused to budge and demanded a fee fit for a keeper who had just won his fourth Premier League title in a row.

Manchester City is eager to keep him and is ready to open talks over a new contract. However, the situation with Ederson remains delicate, as they are bracing for Saudi sides to return next summer. In the scenario that the Brazilian leaves, Guardiola wants a top-choice replacement and considers FC Portoi’s €75 million-rated star Costa one of the names.

Manchester City keen on Costa
Barcelona were recently linked with Costa as a long-term replacement for the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen. However, Porto’s demand to ask for the full release clause of the €75 million-rated star will scupper any move to Catalonia, meaning Manchester City might have the upper hand in this particular chase. Costa has also been eyeing a move to the Premier League as he wants to test himself there.

However, Manchester City are not prepared to pay that price, as they reportedly value Costa at around €40-45 million. Hence, there could be a prolonged period of negotiations between the two clubs, as there’s an expectation that Porto might eventually concede somewhere between the two valuations.
